Do I really need to send the yellow stereo wire to the battery??????

So, the sales person told me at the store that all I would have to do would be to hook up the wires and go, however, the instructions say that the yellow memory wire needs to be sent to the battery. I guess the wire on the harness is a thicker guage then the wire on the after market harness. What do you think? Would I have problems if I just hooked it up to the wire on the harness, or do you think that I could get away with it without any damage? If I ran the wire to the battery, I would be worried about causing a leak through where ever I put it. The old rubber seals for the wireing harnesses are probably pretty old and brittle by now. Thanks for your help!
