I did this fix on my 79 264GL a couple of months back and have been very happy with not having to fight the car from wanting to turn to the left. I will try tp be as detailed as possible with the procedure but I apoligize if I make a mistake.
With the front end on jack stands, turn on the engine, and see if the wheels turn to the left. If they do (Just like my CAM Gear rack did) get underneath the car (hence the jackstands), take off the belly pan if necessary, and when you look at the bottom of the rack-towards the drivers side of the rack - there is a cover that is bolted on by two bolts. The cover looks like a camshaft plug cover.
By removing this plug you should be able to see a nut and a special lockwasher with that has different tabs on it. One of those tabs will be bent up in a way that it does not allow the nut to loosen up. You have to bend the bent tab on the washer down and then the nut will be able to come out. Be careful that you do not pull on anything because all the inner guts that make up the CAM Gear will want to come out.
Once you remove the nut you will be able to get at that special lockwasher with all those tabs. You should be able to see that the lockwasher had two tabs that were bent. The first tab was the one that you had to bend down in order to remove that nut. The second tab is bent away from you (toward the rear of the car) and goes in a slot along the shaft of the CAM Gear rack. This tab you DO NOT BEND.
No here is the tricky part so please excuse me for any confusion.
From the Manual:
"If the torque has to be increased for the left side - decreased for the right side (i.e. wheel turns to the left on it's own) proceed as follows:
Straighten the lockwasher tab which was bent for locking the bearing race (adjustment nut), bend over the next tab to the left (counter clockwise). Turn the adjustment nut (bearing race) to the left until it's groove fits the lockwasher tab if it was in its place (in other words turn the adjustment nut/bearing brace to the left just enough for the bent tab on the lockwahser to fit perfectly in the nuts groove). Now fit the lockwasher and nut. Fit the cover back on the steering rack and check the steering."
If the car still steers a bit to the left than you would want to go back in and bend the lockwasher on more tab to the left (counter clockwise). Keeping going back in and bending the tabs to the left until the steering wheel feels the same when your steering to the left or to the right (wheels are still of the ground).
I have included some pictures to lead you in the right direction. My 79 264GL would turn on it's own so bad that I could make left turns with out grabing the wheel. I tried this in an empty parking lot and was suprised that the steering was so bad. Once I adjusted the pressure by using this method I have been loving my straight steering. I take it that the rack needs adjustment because the seals are getting old. I do not know how much time this would buy for your or my CAM Gear Rack but I would think that the rack would wear out to the point where you would just have to buy a new/rebuilt rack. Post the results if this fixes your problem. Good Luck!

Sincerely,
