Does the trim around the rear side windows of a 245 lock the seal in??? 200 1983

I had son's 83 245 repainted and the shop removed the rear side windows of the station wagon to repair the rusted areas near the lower part of the windows. Now they installed the glass and the rubber seal BUT did not put in the metal trim that fits around the outsside of the rubber seal. I'm afraid that if they take out the seal again to re-install the metal trim, they will tear or rip the rubber gasket that seals the window to the frame. Can I just leave the metal trim off? Or does it lock the rubber seal onto the window?
Thanks,
el Raidman
