ignition OFF : amp light ON 200 1975

we have a similar strange occurence to
[Colin Spikes posted on Wed Sep 17 18:17 UTC 2003..... Amp Light on when car is not!]

car was parked for a few days (was fine before) went to start - completely dead battery. Ended up buying new battery as old one wouldn't charge.
Next day new battery was flat (hadn't driven anywhere).
recharged battery and started car then after turning engine off noticed amp light was on and when ignition turned on (but engine not started) there are no warning lights at all when there should be.

have tried suggestions in responses to Colin Spikes post (checked grounds) but to no avail and have ruled out ignition switch fault.

any hints???
