Are the Volvo Diesels any good? 200 1983

i am looking at purchasing a 1983 volvo 240 with a diesel in it. i know nothing about them. i have own alot of diesels of several different car makers and have enjoyed them all, but the diesel in volvo i do not know who makes them ( i am guessing volkswgon), and i don't know about their service. i am also sure that they also have weaknesses as all engines do. lastly, is it a impossible task to convert a gas volvo to a diesel volvo?
