960 block failure questions 900 1992

After a couple of months of slowly increasing coolant leakage, my 92 964 has opened up wide enough that it drips out about a drop per second cold. My hopes of welding up a couple of pinholes with the MIG have been dashed.

My wife wants to scrap it. I want to swap engines.

The questions:

What is the earliest engine that won't have this problem?

What is the newest engine that can fit properly, assuming I swap the accessories, sensors, etc?

Anything to watch out for?

Suggestions on sources for short blocks, long blocks, or complete engines?

Encourage me, if you can. My car's life hangs in the balance.

Thanks!
