Bad thermostat? 200 1984

My temp guage has been reading very hot these past couple days when I know the engine is still cold (Normally the needle hovers around the middle.) After a few minutes of driving it goes back down. Also when the guage says its hot I get no heat from my vents, then as the needle drops back to its half-way spot the heat returns...

Sounds like the thermostat to me. Are these easy to replace? Available at pnp or where?
