Rebuild Engine? 900 1996

I have a 1996 960 that burns about 1qt of oil every 500 miles and the exhaust is usually a little smokey (especially after idling for awhile).

A mechanic looked at it when I had some smog repairs done and said the engine probably overheated and that the springs in the piston rings were probably weakened. He suggested a used engine for $3000 and $1500 for labor (he also mentioned a new engine totaling $6000).

I'm wondering if just a valve job would resolve the oil burning and the smoking. Any suggestions? Are the 960s particularly hard to rebuild? I think I could probably do it myself for a lot less.
