VOLVO 745 1991 Stalls in wet weather 700 1991

I've been struggling with my 745 stalling in really wet weather, while being
driven...in the worst possible places to boot.
Well, I'd replaced the wires, distro, rotor and ign coil..all to no effect...
after doing some more detective work, I managed to kill the engine in the driveway.
I found there is what looks like a speed sensor on the top of the tranny (automatic) just where the tranny is bolted to the engine below the distributor.
The wires appeared cut and frayed...so being adventurous I started wiggling them
after soaking the car with a hose and voila the car stalled...
Can anyone advise me what this probe is?... I may have permanently "fixed" the problem which means It's dead in the drive ...
any comments, also regarding replacing this (anything special as far as calibration or just replace it...) would be helpful too..
regards
Dans
