Well, apparently the alternator in my Dad's 1977 244DL with an auto tranny is in need of replacement.
The car is currently at a generic "shop" where they said the alternator was bad, but I know better then to let them touch my Dad's 244. I'm having it towed to my place in the morning, but I'm going to be ready to replace the Alt anyway. (The car has been having charging problems recently, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the alt is dead).
Brings me to my questions:
What is involved in removing and replacing the alternator?
Last time I checked (which was a while back) alternators were not cheap, so I was figuring I'd grab one out of a junk yard, unless this isn't a good idea. Which year's of the 240 share my 1977's alternator?
Any additional tips/tricks?
Before I start ripping the alt out, I'll certainly check all the grounds, but I'd like to be prepared for the worst case scenario.
Thanks as always!
Man I wish I had access to my Bentley right now... (It's buried under the B21F I have sitting in the back of my '80 245 along with all my tools in that floor storage compartment... That engine is heavy!) Oh well, I think I still have my Haynes somewhere...
