Ball valve in AW71L 900

Car: 91 940GL B230F & AW71L

My car shifts very hard from 1st to 2nd gear. I have had the fluid flushed and the kickdown cable is adjusted correctly but it hasn't made any difference. I'm going to order the ball valve discussed in the FAQ (small blue valve ball) that controls the shifting. My questions are: can I replace this ball myself? Have other people done this? How hard is it to do? Are there any special tools needed? I'd really like to have a go at this myself if possible as I don't like taking my car to mechanics if I can avoid it (not many good ones around where I live). Can anyone provide some instructions on the ball valve's replacement?

Any advice will be much appreciated
