annoying detonation... problem solved 200 1990

Gentlemen,

I finally fixed the mid range detonation I was experiencing -under a variety of conditions and seasons. After an exhaustive search for a vaccum leak, the conclusion was reached last week to gut the air box and seal the hot air inlet. The flapper unit was saved & stashed away, and I "tested" the car all week.

Without a doubt, the engine was taking in hot air from the exhaust. Last fall, I replaced the thermostat in part due to its unknown age and time in the car (1990 b230f/aw). Thought I was doing myself a favor... I know the thermo was working as the door could, at times, be heard creaking open and closed. Also, I changed the air cleaner during the winter and, as I removed and cleaned the air box, noticed that the door was shut (car bone cold).

Anyway, no more ping! Gone! Is it possible that the thermo I got from FCP was bad? Or, that the door wasn't sealing appropraitely (my guess)? I surely could bring the thermo unit in the house and run some tests on it; but, I doubt, I will ever put that contraption back in the car... seems poorly designed.

So, am I right in assuming that, in the winter I will simply have to let the car warm up before driving away? Will I experience any cold weather drama? What about possible damage to the AMM? Does anyone, who reads this far, have an extra 016 AMM for a 2.4LH system they want to sell (for my spare)?
