While trying to replace a leaky pressure hose on my power steering, I have somehow killed my car.

I replaced the hose no sweat. The package said to "disconnect the return hose connecion from the pump" to bleed it and to "place pressure cap over the shaft"
ok, fine. So I start the car. Then it dies. then I reconnect the return hose in a panic. nada. what did I do?

it's an 87 240. I'm pretty sure it's a a saginaw.
