Marvel Mystery Oil In Fuel Tank? 200 1988

I think the pre-pump in my '88 240 is going. I have been putting a few ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil per fill up in the tank. This seems to quiet the clicking noises a little bit. Is this just my mind or does this stuff help...or perhaps hurt? It will be a few weeks before I can address the pre-pump, due to cash flow issues, should I leave well enough alone and leave the MMO out of the fuel?
