I bought the POR-15 starter kit 5 years ago. I tested it on one of the brackets that holds the radiator in place (on a 240). It unfortunately began to peel after 3 years. Here are a few comments/observations.


- I followed the instructions: removed all loose rust using a wire brush, made sure the surface was clean and oil-free using the marine=clean product in the kit, soaked the part in a solution of metal-ready also included in the kit, thoroughly dried the part, and applied the POR-15 paint
- USE GLOVES AND WEAR OLD CLOTHES! This stuff didn't come off my hands for at least a week and a half.
- it goes on thick, put you can get a thinner/solvent for it
- I'm not sure where I went wrong to have it peel after only 3 years, but I am convinced that you need to take it down to the bare metal (whether still slightly rusty or not), removing any old paint
- I've never heard of anyone using it to actually paint the visible portions of body panels, since it's so thick and doesn't seem to go on evenly
- you might contact POR-15 themselves to ask about applicability to body panels as a basecost (actually, midcoat: you'd apply metal-ready first to the bare metal)

Try some for yourself -- it couldn't be any worse than what the body shops are using, whatever that is
