Flashing shift light in 5th gear 700 1989

OK, guys...had this wierdness happen to me on my way back to work from lunch. While getting onto the interstate (long, sweeping on-ramp) from another major highway, I glanced down and noticed that my shift light was flashing. I saw it flash three times, but it may have been doing it before then. I was already in fifth gear (M47 non-turbo) so I can't imagine what this would indicate. Any ideas?
