idiot lighs don't light up

Hi All, I have a 1990 760 with the idiot lights out and no juice to the red wire of the alt. until 2500 RPM's. This was ok until I loaned the car out and they called me telling me it won't start. I get it back and the only lights that come on are the seat belt and the arrow when I turn the key on. Can somebody give me a clue as to where to look for the problem. Much thanks. Pauli. I checked all the fuses in the drivers side panel and they are all working.
