New belts, bushings cure noise problems 200 1981

Son's 81 was emitting a lot of squealing, squeaking, chirping noise even at a steady idle speed. I thought maybe my rebuild job on the PS pump was going south - it sounded like "bearing chirp" or maybe the vanes in the rotor. But a giveaway was the frequent squeal when RPM changed - that made me suspect the V-belts. Ordered the full suite of belts from FCP along with new OE-type (non-poly) bushings for the alternator and PS pump mounts.

With the split pulley on the older B21/23 crank, I find the V-belt (or water pump, or timing belt) job goes much smoother if you pull the rad and shroud - so out they came.

The bushings were in horrible condition. Those in the PS pump brackets were ovalled, so its pulley was not aligned and probably moved around under load. The alternator bracket bushings were rock hard and disintegrated upon removal, even though they were a loose fit in their holes. A little vaseline and use of the channel lock pliers got the new bushings inserted with ease.

A very unhappy discovery was that FCP had sent the wrong PS pump belt, a 10X1075 instead of the proper (as shown in their catalog) 13X1075. Late Sunday PM, so a rapid trip to the parts store where I got hosed $19 for a Dayco generic belt...but it fits. The PS belt is "behind" the AC belt, so a major pain to replace. FCP apologized for the error and will send a replacement belt with a shipping coupon to return the wrong one.

Final result: things are MUCH quieter. And pumps/pulleys/belts should all last longer with the fresh bushings holding everything in the proper alignment.
