Opinions on engine oil choice for 10+ year old turbos. viscosity? synthetic? 700 1991

My "journey" of tracking down a bunch of small oil leaks has lead me to the issue of oil choice - synthetic vs. conventional, light vs. heavy etc.

I have a '91 740 turbo with about 214 000 kms (130 000 miles) and do normal driving.

I've noticed that my oil (10W30 dino) turns black soon after a change, even after I did an engine flush.

I have read the info in the FAQ advising the use of 10W30 for usual conditions and 15W40 for "extreme duty".

Someone at the Volvo dealer (not a mechanic) with similar symtoms (small leaks, consumption and dirty oil) in a turbo advised the use of 15W40 dino and that synthetic was unnecessary with the greater viscosity.

Opinions??
