Two simple Non-Volvo questions (hopefully)

I'm trying to help a girl at school fix a coulple problems with her car. It is a '92 Toyota Cressida. and the heater sometimes kicks in within her 10 mile commute to school and other times it does not. Any ideas? She has had the radiheater flushed. I was wondering if the theremastate should be replaced next. She has been told by a coulple of shops that she needs to replace the heater core, but that does not seem lickly, because the heater works great sometimes, but just not all of the time. I think that some of the heating controls might be computerized,I don't recall for shure. It's not digital though. Hope it's not a computer problem.

The second question, was she had the oil changed at one of the 10 minute places and they striped the threads on the oil plug. (she said it was too late to go back to have them fix it.) I'm thinking that the oil pan could be pulled and have it rethreaded. Would this work?

Thank you very much and happy bricking!
