Should I put synthetic 15W50 in? 200

I have a case of Mobil 1 15W50 oil sitting around that was suppose to be for my BMW E30 before the timing went out. I need to change the oil in my wife's '85 240DL but not sure if synthetic is a good choice with 202k miles on it. Just afraid of the oil cleaning out plugged oil leaks and also burning more oil. Back on my BMW E21 I tried synthetic and it ate that stuff like it was gas. I think I'm going to try it just to see and if not, go back next oil change. What do you guys/girls think?
