Thanks for the info! Interesting! I didn't know the factory installed that feature for US delivered cars (are you certain this wasn't retrofitted by a PO?). I guess that means you still have a foot switch for hi/lo beam control, right?

I seem to recall that thread about the tach loosing power during headlight flashing...I must have written it then, but it STILL sure sounds like the symptoms of a high voltage-drop, under load of the relay coil, caused the tach problem...are you sure it is a "bad" relay, and not the Lucas curse of the poor fuseblock design, in action (as described in: http://www.intelab.com/swem/gastight_II.htm under Symptoms)? I want to reread that thread...do you recall when it was posted or better yet, have the URL?
