Throttle position sensor?? 200

Hi all...I am experiencing a strange sporadic problem with the throttle in my 85 240dl wagon. Most of the time everything works well since recent replacement of the AMM and patching of a hole in the acordian tube between the AMM and Throttle Body but sometimes, despite the throttle being depressed (even all the way to the floor) there is no response past a position just off of the gas pedal being released all the way? Most times the car revs just fine with the power one would expect but from time to time there is nothing when the gas pedal is pushed....I can maintain 80km/hr or so on the highway easily once I get there by holding the throttle steady depressed just slightly but when I go to speed up there is sometimes no response...the engine doesnt bog per sey it just does not rev up or drop down to a lower gear?? Could this be due to a faulty throttle position sensor at the throttle body?? If so can they be cleaned up to operate correctly? The car has about 165000km on it.

Thanks for the help....
