Auto overdrive out, will the whole tranny go out? 200 1989

My "89 240 with 128k miles automatic overdrive dropped out and never returned. I can hear and feel the solenoid and relay click in an out. I flushed the tranny since this happened with no change. Local independent volvo shop checked solenoid says tranny shot, need to replace. Will the rest of the tranny go out soon if overdrive (4th) is truly shot? And also how is the best way to hunt down a used tranny and know I am not buying more problems? Thanks
