960 Auto transmission problems 900 1992

I have a 960 saloon wich suffers from a problem with, what I think is the torque converter "lock up solenoid" sticking when stuck in traffic. - The car jerks violently when drive is engaged, the lower gear changes gets jerky, and when stowing down to stop, the drive stays engaged causing the whole car to shudder before the drive disengages when the RPM drops to 500RPM. Reading the forum it would appeare that this is not an unknown fault. How difficult is it to change the solonoid? Is it possible with the unit installed in the car or does the transmission have to be removed?
