8 speed transmision 200

has anyone bypassed the 4th gear indicator on there m46 so that OD will work in all gears?
i know its been done alot on m41s. the thing everyone says is to make sure that OD isn't on when it's in reverse or the OD will get shreded.
so i have an idea about puting a relay conected to the reverse indicator so it will turn the OD off when its put in reverse.
will that keep the OD from being shreded? does the damage to the OD happen when the transmision is put in reverse or is it done when there is load apllied in reverse( let clutch out and hit the gas)?
