reverse engagement clunk 200

i have a bw55 on a 1981 244gl which is nearing 220000kms from previous tranny rebuild. i am in the process of getting the car roadworthy. my problem is the at was slipping in R and D when cold (i haven;t driven the thing far enough to know if it doies it when hot). i replaced the tranny fluid and the slipping has been reduced dramatically however it does take a few seconds to engage into R > D. when going into R there is a loud clunk from the rear somewhere. the at needs the shifter bushings replaced. what could be causing this problem, and is it unsafe to drive the car with this problem?

thanks,
chez
