Intermittant transmission problem 200 1981

My 1981 240 GL Wagon automatic transmission will not always slip immediatley into gear (forward or reverse). It happens ~ once every 50-100 times and it only happens just after starting (it never has left me stranded at a stop light etc). When it happens I can get the car into gear by increasing the rpm and it will engage. The fluid levels are fine and have recently been changed. Is 390K the most I will get from this transimssion? Is there anything I can do to extend its life?
Thanks
RM
