Clutch problems 200 1987

I thought that I was having clutch cable problems but now I am not so sure it isn't the actual clutch. I was driving today on the freeway and shifted down to 4th to accleerate and the clutch was slipping like crazy and I shifted back to 5th and tried to acclelerate and the same thing happened. after a bit though it fully engaged and didn't slip. The slipping only happned soon after a shift and I am wondering if this could be caused by a bad clutch cable or if it is the actual clutch dying. I have never really had it slip before, however in the past there are times where the clutch would take extra times to engage in 2nd and 3rd gear. This i figued was just the cable but now I don't know what to think. Any advice on how to know for sure?
