License Plate Illumination Lights 200 1985

Took my 245 to a local shop. Part of the "overall" safety inspection found I had no license plate lights in rear gate. I sort of knew that the cause was the broken wires at the hinge, but shop pulled the light holder/lens out to "check them". They look as if the only thing that held them in is an adhesive/caulk. Can't get them to stay back in place. What actually holds them in and how are you supposed to get to bulbs---through the access pannel on inside? A small problem to be sure but to have my beloved 245 "disfigured" is upsetting.
