the problem with most shops today is...THEY EMPLOYEE PARTS CHANGERS, not mechanics!!!!!! this is why i dont take mine to the shops....little story here about parts changers...we bought an 84 242 in 98 from an auction. the reason it was at the auction, it had problems. the guy who owned it had taken(or been taken)by a highly recommened shop herein town. problem was no one there knew anything about volvos...and didnt know about this web site.
we bought the car for $600, none of the buyers would go more then $500 so the guy was gona take it home. we offered $600 and he took it. well i got a glove box full of workorders...to the tune of $800.00...ALL NEW PARTS...and it still dont run right!!!! no 1 problem was cold start. simple if you konw what to look for. i check the vacume pod on the black box...no vacume!!!bingo! get another black box, not the right part # so i unsolder the pod in mine and the new one interchange them and IT STARTS RIGHT UP. 2nd problem 1/2 tank of gas and it dies going into turns....i came here and asked...was told to pull the fuel sending unit and check 2" piece of rubber hose...BINGO!!! so for less the $10, and a couple days....I REPAIRED A CAR...THAT $800 WORTH OF NEW PARTS DIDNT!!!
this is the differance between a MECHANIC...and a PARTS CHANGER!!! oh and by the way....the 84 volvo which had 167,000 on it in 98 now has 202,000 and its still runnin good....now wife has a 95 850GLT ....as her main ride!!!!
