What's wrong 200

So, My air conditioner on my 1988 240 Dl Sedan does not work and I would like to fix it after two years of not have it work., in looking at the records, the last time that it was recharged was 1995 when the pervious owner had it. That was quite a while ago. I'm trying to figure out if I had a leak or if I just need to recharge it. What has worked for you guys? I guess the dealer want's $1800 to fix it in a way that it can be guaranteed. That is more then I would want to spend to fix it...there has to be a cheaper way. Also, my indipendent shop does not want to touch it...say's it's not worth it. I guess it would not be such a big deal if I had power windows but not have them makes not having ac very frusterating.

Thank you very much and Happy Bricking.

PS. I think the car still has the old style ac chemical in it...
