Seriously, the last "complete" A/C job I saw, which was on a 1988 245 by the way, the owner spent just about $1800. This was a new compressor, evaporator, condenser, hoses, o-rings, Volvo conversion kit, and evac/recharge with 134a.

The parts ARE that much, retail. The beauty of this site is gaining the knowledge to do some of it yourself, and finding the deals on parts.

With luck, and a typical requirement for parts, I'd expect it's gonna cost $750 anyway. But I'm pessimistic and I assume it's probably got a bad compressor, probably a bad hose somewhere, and maybe a condenser.

It's probably going to take 2 or 3 charging and leak-detecting sessions to get it all straightened out. This is why 15 year old airconditioners don't work, and don't get fixed when they quit.
