Engine runs poorly after hard acceleration. 120-130 1967

I have a B20 engine in my car with dual SU which seem to be in pretty good shape. The problem is that sometimes when I floor it through the a couple gear changes to say get up to 40mph in 3rd quickly, or when I get on the freeway and accelerate hard up into 4th, the car will run poorly after I let off the gas. It will idle sloppily and will be very low on power. It usually goes away after a little bit, especially if I take it out of gear and rev it up and down a couple times. I first suspected maybe a stuck piston in one of the carbs, but the other day when it ehxibited this behavior I was able to hear a click when I raised and lowered the pistons with the litte button on the carb, and it didn't seem to solve the problem. Any ideas or further troubleshooting ideas?? The car will sometimes also have a hot start problem in which I need to floor it and crank it if I stop the car for 10 to 15 minutes and try to start it up again. Don't know if that is related.

THanks,

Mario m.
