Other than removing and replacing the wrong cylindrical cap before cleaning the internal filter on the transmission it was a routine service of an m46od transmission. I drained the old fluid and cleaned the magnet in the small access plate on the bottom of the overdrive. The screen was clean. When I removed the wrong cap there was a ball bearing that fell out, put I recovered that and replaced it before putting the cap back into place. I removed the correct cap and cleaned the fine mesh filter and then replaced it. I replaced the pan on the overdrive unit.
I filled the transmission with FA automatic transmission fluid making a note to order the synthetic. It took just a small amount over two quarts to fill the transmission. The car is on stands. I started it and ran it through the gears. When I shifted into overdrive there was no change. Several attempts at engaging the overdrive were unsuccessful. I turned the car off and and checked the relay. It activated with each press of the switch as did the solenoid. I checked the fluid level and it is fine although I would have thought it would have taken a little more than the two quarts.
Started the car again and ran it awhile on the stands in fourth gear. It still will not engage the overdrive. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? I'm thinking back to removing the wrong cap in the search for the filter but I'm fairly sure the only loose item in there was the ball perched up on the center of the cap. Any help greatly appreciated.

I should probably mention that the overdrive was working before this service other than the relay would not always activate with a press of switch. The relay had several suspect solder joints on three of the larger lugs which I resoldered today- however the relay and solenoid are (sounding like they are) working fine.
