164e Solenoid ? 140-160 1975

This car would not start after the last cold snap. The starter would not operate
... just a faint "klik" somewhere under the dash. The wiring (of which there is
plenty) is old and brittle. I took the starter off, and it whirred o.k. hooked to a batter, but one of the contacts was broken on the solenoid. I installed
a new solenoid, worked ok off car, and when starting to hook the wires to the
solenoid, found the large (#10 ?)wire from the battery "+" to the top solenoid
post. A second, smaller red wire with large eye at solenoid end, was connected
to the battery "-" post. If this wire goes on the same solenoid post as the
large red wire, wont it short out? Or does this hook to the other large solenoid post. The manual schematic shows this goes to a connector plate before
it goes to the key switch. But I can't find the connector plate. Where is it
located physically on the car? I am grateful for any help!!!
