Fuel pump voltage question 200 1978

My '78 245 likes to buck, especially at higher RPMs. Most resources on the internet and a few Volvo mechanics have told me this is usually caused by a bad in tank pump. I was also advised to check the voltage at the pump before replacing it.
I did that today, and found the voltage at the pump varying between 5 and 11 volts. Apparently someone had done some wiring work at the pump, and did not do a very good job of crimping the butt connector. I replaced it and am now getting a solid 13 volts at the pump.
The problem improved immensely but did not go away. I wondered if the main pump also was getting an undervoltage, so I unhooked the necessary wires and had my housemate crank the car while I read the meter. It bounced around a bit, but stayed around 11 volts most of the time.
I thought this may or may not be a problem, so I tried to wire my multimeter in series to get a reading while the car is running. The problem I am having now is that the car will not start when the mulitimeter is wired in. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to test the voltage the pump is getting while the car is running, or should I even bother?
