eggcrate grille swap and 2 other questions 700 1989

My 1989 764TI has the stock vertical chrome grille, and I would like to put on a 740 eggcrate grille, but I read somewhere that it will fit only up to an '87. Does anyone know why that is? What will I have to do to make it fit? Also, I am lightly considering swapping the AW72? for a manual trans. What's that involve and which would be the best for my car? (M46, M67, M57, etc.) Lastly, I can't get those two screws that are under that little panel underneath the E-brake handle. Any tips?
