A/C: R12 Compressor on R134a system? Help! 200

I bought a 1993 240 Wagon which had the r134a system from the factory. However, some yahoo removed the A/C compressor and chopped the two hoses that go to the compressor. I am going to replace the unit.

I have a compressor from a 1988 240 which should mount right up where the old compressor was. However, can I use it? I don't know if it's an R12 compressor or an R134a compressor. How can I tell? If it's R12 and I can use it, do I still do a conversion on it? I don't want to mess up the rest of the system. Are the hose fitting different? Any knowledgeable input appreciated!

Thanks!

Karl
