When in neutral and car is moving does the transmission gears move? 200

if the car is in nuetral and it is moving then are the trans gears moving as well? Or does the movement end at the differential...with it somehow stopping the trans from moving?

My car's parking brake console has developed this weird tapping noise..which goes away after warm up. It's not the engine because the tapping noise is still there when in nuetral. It increases in pitch with speed and disapears at very high speeds( 45 onwards). It sounds almost like somebody drumming there fingers underneath the parking brake console (I hope the po didn't run anybody over or something:) ). Parking brake engages(although it needs a bit of adjusting). Car is a 1982 kjet at 199,000 miles.

If your stumped too..your not the only one...
