Diagnosing ball joints 140-160 1974

I'm in the middle of replacing control arm bushings and upper ball joints. While I have the controls arms off, maybe this would be a good time to replace the lower ball joints as well. I can't see anything wrong with them and they feel "firm". Is there any foolproof way of determining whether they are good or not? On both upper ball joints the rubber seal was cracked, so that was easy to tell. Obviously I don't want to change the lower joints if they're good.
