"Earlier than 1986, GL also meant a different paint color, clear coat method rather than enamel (or whatever it is), a GL log on the steering wheel, M46 got a leather shifter boot.

'81-'85 GLs had a "fancier" grille... Pretty sure that applies to '78-80 244 & 245s as well. The flush-nose model grilles I'm not sure, but the 242 and 244s (thru '78) had different tail-lights...

You probably knew all that anyway- interesting tidbit about the paint, though, thanks.
