Speedometer Failed 700 1991

Car has 160k miles and today the speedometer dropped from 65 to zero on the freeway. Worked for a few minutes after sitting for an hour; stopped again.

I read the 700 FAQ and it sounds like a not uncommon problem, but before I start looking for worn wires or bad grounds I thought I'd ask if there is a recommended order to check things?

Also, how does it work? Is there not a mechanical link to the speedo as there was in my 240?

Thank you.

Josh
