B230F Tick in Motor...... 200

My 1991 240 B230F is ticking as it runs. Now I'm thinking that the knock sensor is amplifying the problem but I'm curious what the condition is. Has anyone dealt with this---bad valves, bad adjustment on the cam/shim clearance? I don't think the timing would do it--the belt went in my other 240 and nothing interfered so I'm thinking the head might be bad? Well if your versed in this please lend me your knowledge.

PS. fuel delivery problem, whinning coming from the underside of car just in front of the rear driverside wheel. This is the exterior auxillary fuel pump? It sounds like hell...anyone replaced this?
