automatic transmission overdrive problem after 20 mile highway drive. 900 2003

My 39 940T has a new problem. After driving at highway speed for about 20 miles the tranny will kick down with minimum gas pedal pressure, and fall out of overdrive at unusually high speeds 48-50 mph. I can sometimes cure this teporarily by playin with the kickdown cable &the accelerator cable. Most of the time this cures it temporarily. At no time does the overdrive off indicator light come on. Is the kickdown cable dragging somewhere? I can't tell. What should I do to trouble sshoot this problem? I need help with this problem Listers, before I blindly start changing parts.
