How do i check my coil? 1800

1. New plugs
2. New wires
3. New cap
4. New Rotar
5. New Points
All im trying to get is this: How can i check that the coil is working? Just the coil; all other parts are brand new...i understand if any connections are broken i wont get spark...i unhooked the coil wire plug from the top of the distributor ---the other end is still connected to the coil--- and took the unattatched end and held it close to the block...is this what u mean when u say "check for spark at the coil, then to the cap" when i did that i did not see a spark from the wire that is still attached to the top of the coil...
thanks for your help
