How do i check my coil? 1800

Ron,
Sorry if I wasn't clear. Test 1 was designed to measure current flow in the coil by taking the wire to the points and placing a meter or test light between it and a ground. The points are out of the equation. All I was trying to determine was whether current was flowing through the coil.

If current is flowing through the coil (positive test 1),then we insert the points back into the equation, with the meter or test light in series between the wire that normally connects to the points and the points. In this test, I'm determining if the points open and close, knowing that current flows through the coil. (someone elsewhere in this thread suggested removing the cap and looking at whether the points spark or not as the starter is engaged).
