740 Wagon - 'Honking' resonance at 950 rpm 700 1991

I've been chasing some problems with my wagon over the last few months...
I'm still having some issues with stalling in very very wet weather
I've put on new wires and distro, but water seems to be thrown up the back of the
engine in real wet weather (there was a shield spot welded to the exhaust on the right side below the engine, that's long gone, and never had any problems till this winter but I think the new wire from the ign coil where it goes into the distributor cap had some moisture in it... that may have wicked in where the wire goes into the boot...I've sprayed it with protectant to see if that helps..
Meanwhile while I had my head in the engine compartment I started gently bringing the revs up from idle to 1000 rpm.. when
I noticed an odd resonance at about
950 RPM brings on a loud "honking" sound that seems to be on the intake side of the engine..tried listening with a stethscope but can't pinpoint it...
although it seems to be around the ICV but not really convinced of that...
if I hit the resonance just right the engine falters...
TB has just been serviced with new gasket, flame trap and PCV all cleaned out
ICV looks ok... but the idle hunts a bit up and down...

anyone hear this "honk" on a normally aspirated B 230 f?

thanks
Dans
