drain plug problems

I have a 1988 Volvo 240Dl that I wanted to change the oil plug on a while ago. I bought a new one at my dealor, and tried to install it. It mad about a half turn and stopped. I didn't force it, and my old one was only slightly worn at the corners, I just wanted to replace it for good measure though. I took the new one back and I'm still using the old one. What do you think the problem was with the new one? At what point should these be replaced?

Thanks and happy bricking
