Odd engine sounds 700 1990

I have a 1990 740 turbo with about 196,000km (say, 130,000mi). In the past few weeks it has developed an odd "sound" when accellerating, esspecially in the first 20 minutes of being run. I don't know how to describe it other then to say that the engine sounds like a deisel (which it is not). Anybody have any thoughts on what is going on or what this may be from?
